Today is the day many have been waiting for with excitement (and fear). This new version of Microsoft Windows is released today as a free upgrade for “genuine” users of Windows 7 and 8. It was provisionally reported in error that the this long awaited update would be free for both genuine and pirated copies of Windows. Today the company made it official via an email to Windows Insider members:
For PCs running Genuine Windows 7/8 – these machines qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update. (You can also do a media-based upgrade though the Microsoft Software Download site.)
For PCs not running Genuine Windows 7/8/10 – you can purchase Windows 10 at your local retailer or at online retailers like Microsoft Store.com.
I am disappointed in the restriction, but understand it was a business choice. It has been reported that some pirates are successfully upgrading to Windows 10. Upgrading my HP Envy running a legal copy of Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 was a beautifully simple process. Your results may vary.
A few of the features Microsoft is promoting about Windows 10 include:
- Its fast and familiar with the Start menu, Taskbar, and Desktop we are all used to using.
- Its the most secure Windows ever and includes Windows Hello.
- It includes a new version of the Cortana personal digital assistant.
- The new Microsoft Edge browser has arrived and replaces the much hated Internet Explorer.
I expect this to be the best Windows yet. How about you? Have you already updated? What do you think?
